Farmhouse Facelift

Being part of an HGTV show was an offer that was too exciting for Covenant Construction to pass up. They were thrilled to be part of the Farmhouse Facelift show to do a renovation on a rural century home.

Michael’s family had owned the home for several generations, but it had been sold. When he and Kristen had the chance to buy it back, they were excited to reestablish the family roots. Having purchased it sight unseen, their excitement soon cooled because it had been a rental property for years and was in desperate need of TLC.

The main floor had a choppy layout with many small rooms, making it difficult for Kristen to keep an eye on the couple’s three young children. Making this area work better for the family meant ensuring open sight lines, and a larger place to gather.

The kitchen had seen better days, even before being used as rental unit, and lacked the storage and functionality this family needs. By removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, this was transformed into a large working area with easy sight lines to the living room and playroom.

The new two-toned open concept kitchen boasts a large, colourful island with maple butcher block top and plenty of seating. The island is painted in Behr’s colour Tasmanian Sea to bring a pop of colour and life into the space. Its turned legs complement the bead board detailing on the new banquet and highlight the historic look of this family home. The custom range hood and porcelain apron-front sink bring the character of the original farmhouse to the new space.

The main floor features original wood trim and hardwood flooring, which Kristen and Michael wanted to keep as part of the renovation. The hardwood flooring in the living room and playroom were sanded and refinished in a custom stain to match the new luxury vinyl plank flooring that was installed in the kitchen. In the new playroom, a storage bench with custom cushions provides a cozy space for the kids to play and read.

Since this is a working farm having a full bathroom on the main floor is important to this family with three active children. The existing bathroom was not functional with its cramped layout and corner shower. By reconfiguring the layout and bringing in a splash of colour this new main bathroom is as beautiful as it is functional. The teal tile in the shower brings the colour and life of the kitchen throughout the main floor.
